  • Define – During this phase, problems and challenges are clearly defined and objectives for improvements are established;
  • Measure – During the Measure phase, data from the relevant processes are collected to make current performance transparent and measurable;
  • Analyze – Subsequently, the actual causes of the problems and challenges are determined in the Analyze phase based on facts and data-driven input;
  • Improve – Afterward, improvement measures are developed, tested, and implemented in the Improve phase;
  • Control – Finally, the Control phase ensures that the achieved results are maintained through monitoring, standardization, and clear process agreements.

In the world of logistics, the DMAIC model is applied, among other things, to shorten lead times, improve inventory reliability, and increase the quality of order picking. Additionally, this form of process optimization minimizes the risk of damage, optimizes transport planning, and increases delivery reliability. 

Daily Stand-Up: Optimizations on the Shop Floor
One of the most widely used Lean tools in the field of Lean warehousing is the Daily Stand-Up. During a daily meeting of approximately 10 to 15 minutes, team leaders and their colleagues discuss the performance of the previous workday, the plan for the current day, and any bottlenecks. By using visual management, important Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as productivity and utilization rate are made visible. The same applies to Critical To Quality indicators, or CTQs.

The strength of the Daily Stand-Up lies primarily in the involvement of colleagues. Everyone is given the opportunity to propose improvement ideas and actively contribute to finding solutions for the logistics processes. As a result, Lean Six Sigma in logistics creates ownership on the shop floor, and problems are identified, recorded, and resolved more quickly. This prevents process disruptions.   • White Belt – White Belt training provides employees with insight into the basic principles of Lean Six Sigma and their role within improvement projects.
  • Yellow Belt – Yellow Belts actively participate in improvement projects.
  • Orange Belt – Orange Belts implement small improvements in their own work environment and participate in larger improvement projects led by both Green Belts and Black Belts.
  • Green Belt – Green Belts independently lead improvement projects within their own department or business unit.
  • Black Belt – Black Belts initiate and guide major improvement initiatives that involve the entire organization.
  • Master Black Belt – Master Black Belts have achieved the highest level of expertise within Lean Six Sigma in logistics. They work closely with Green Belts and Black Belts within major improvement projects. Additionally, they are authorized to provide Belt training if an organization is ISO 13053-1 Six Sigma certified.
